Jalen Hurts. Tua Tagovailoa. Mac Jones. These are just some of the names of the quarterbacks that DeVonta Smith played with during his time as a wide receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Hurts and Tagovailoa are now both in the NFL, with Hurts throwing passes for the Philadelphia Eagles and Tagovailoa as the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback.

Jones could soon join them in the pros as he is set to join the 2020 NFL Draft after helping Alabama to another title this season. But when asked about his preferred quarterback between Jones and Tagovailoa, Smith had a ready answer, according to Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback by Albert Breer.

One team asked Smith, point-blank: Tua Tagovailoa or Jones? The question was barely finished before Smith answered: Mac Jones. He was bold and definitive about it, as I heard it.

As Breer mentioned in his report, it is understandable why DeVonta Smith preferred catching passes from Jones than Tagovailoa, since he was the Crimson Tide’s signal-caller during his Heisman-Trophy winning season.

In 2020, Smith finished with 117 catches for 1856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns, which are historic numbers, as he helped Alabama to a perfect season. With Jones being under center during his senior season, it makes sense for him to say that he prefers him as a quarterback.

However, this bold and definitive statement might not sit well with the Dolphins quarterback, who is entering his second season. Breer also reports that Jones is seen by some NFL teams as not being a first-rounder in the draft, and it is interesting whether he will be drafted and considered as highly as Smith regards him as a quarterback.
