Perhaps in a gesture of good faith to his team, rookie coach Brian Flores cancelled the final practice of Miami Dolphins minicamp on Thursday. Still, that hardly means the Dolphins didn't work toward their ultimate goal of continuing to get better as the regular season approaches.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Dolphins punted on practice Thursday in favor of a conditioning test and meetings between players and coaches.

Flores was introduced as Miami's head coach on February 3rd, less than 24 hours after helping the New England Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Before joining the Dolphins, he'd spent the previous 15 seasons in the Patriots organization, first catching on as a scouting assistant and ultimately being promoted to the team's de facto defensive coordinator last season. Though Flores didn't officially hold the title, he called the plays for New England's defense on a weekly basis in 2018.

Miami, under the stewardship of general manager Chris Grier, is in the early midst of an aggressive rebuilding plan that's unabashedly promoted the team's long-term interests over short-term payoffs. After trading and releasing multiple incumbents like longtime starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and star pass-rusher Cameron Wake, the Dolphins are poised to have over $100 million in cap space and a whopping 10 draft picks in 2020.

Miami fired Adam Gase, who was subsequently hired as head coach of the New York Jets, at the conclusion of the regular season. In three seasons with the team, Gase went 23-25, leading the Dolphins to the 2016 playoffs, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round.
