The Miami Dolphins have ushered in some significant turnover to their roster as of late. It appears safety Reshad Jones has found himself as the next lap casualty.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are releasing Jones in an effort to shore up more cap space:

Dolphins are releasing two-time Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones, per source. The move will become official March 18. His release will free up $5.3 million against the Dolphins’ salary cap.

The decision to part ways with Jones hardly comes as a surprise. He is coming off a lost 2019 NFL season after landing on injured reserve with chest and rib injuries after just four games. The Dolphins are in the midst of a grueling rebuild and is hoping to shore up enough resources to help them kickstart it when they need to.

The Dolphins held quite a fire sale during the 2019 campaign. Rather than get to work on long-term deals for key players like left tackle Laremy Tunsil and cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick, they decided to go ahead and trade them away in exchange for future assets. It is clear they are now looking to put the finishing touches on their approach this offseason.

Fortunately, Jones should have no problem garnering interest on the market and a free agent. He immediately becomes one of the most intriguing options at his position as a two-time Pro Bowler.

Despite his struggles in recent years, it will be interesting to see if the veteran ultimately lands with a playoff contender after spending his career with a Dolphins team that has largely failed to compete.
