The Miami Dolphins are continuing to hint at drafting Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the No. 5 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported the Dolphins have studied up on Herbert at length to go along with a videoconference they had with the former Ducks signal-caller (via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk):

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald the Dolphins have done a significant amount of work studying Herbert over the last two years, and recently had a video conference with him. According to the report, the Dolphins are impressed with Herbert’s size and arm strength but are aware of some evaluators’ concerns about about his accuracy, as well as whether he’ll grow to be a team leader as a franchise quarterback.

Herbert has drawn rave reviews from a number of executives around the league despite being less renowned than Alabama quarterback and fellow prospect Tua Tagovailoa in terms of collegiate success.

However, Herbert has a leg up in the sense he is not followed by durability concerns. He started all 14 games for the Ducks last season and has been healthy throughout his collegiate career. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa's hip injury is still prompting questions even though he has been cleared from a medical standpoint.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier spoke about both Herbert and Tagovailoa on Thursday, calling them both “intelligent players and winners,” per ESPN's Cameron Wolfe.

The “size and arm strength” detail might make Herbert somewhat analogous to Josh Allen as a draft prospect, though he does not have the same kind of scrambling ability as Allen.

In any case, it seems the Dolphins are doing everything they can to evaluate both prospects equally in the final week before the draft.
