Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season will feature multiple must-watch quarterback duels, including New England Patriots rookie Mac Jones squaring off against second-year Miami Dolphins passer Tua Tagovailoa.

The Patriots named Jones as their starting quarterback on Tuesday. And barring any major trade over the coming week, Tagovailoa will be under the center against the Patriots in Week 1.

The two are well familiar with each other, which dates back to their runs with Alabama. Tagovailoa has been watching Jones as of late, and as he noted during a recent press conference, he is much looking forward to a “competitive” clash with his former Crimson Tide teammate.

“I think it’s going to be competitive, just knowing Mac Jones since I’ve got there,” Tagovailoa said. “We got in the same time at Alabama.

“He’s a very competitive guy, very smart, athletic, he's instinctive and I know he’s going to do all he can to get his guys ready offensively. That’s what I’m trying to do for our guys, getting ready for the Patriots next week.

“I haven't been able to talk to Mac. If he's going to watch this sometime, or if it's going to be running on ESPN, good luck Mac.”

They each etched their names in Alabama Crimson Tide history with standout performances in national title games and, most notably, Jones backed up Tagovailoa for the 2018 season and the first half of the 2019 campaign.

Now, they are both in the NFL and will face off against each other for what may be the first of many encounters in the AFC East.

Jones will be looking to prove the Patriots right in their decision to name him as the team’s starting quarterback over Cam Newton. On the other hand, Dolphins quarterback Tagovailoa surely will look to silence the numerous trade rumors that he has been linked with as of late.
