The Miami Dolphins have waived defensive tackle Gabe Wright after he threw a cheap shot at running back Kenyan Drake during a chippy Monday practice, the team announced Tuesday morning.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Wright “grazed Drake with an elbow to the back when Drake wasn't wearing a helmet.” Jackson's source also told him the “shot was uncalled for.” The incident was one of four scuffles in Monday's practice as the Dolphins wind down their training camp.

Even without the incident, Wright was still a long shot to make the roster given the depth on the defensive line. He initially joined the Dolphins last season when he signed on with the practice squad in early September. He was called up to the active roster at the end of the year and appeared in one game, recording one tackle and one pass defensed. The 6-foot-3, 309-pounder was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Auburn.

The Auburn factor is an interesting wrinkle here given Drake went to rival Alabama. The Dolphins running back was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, so the two crossed paths in college.

The 24-year-old Drake is coming off a solid season in which he rushed for 644 yards and caught 32 passes for 239 yards. He reached the end zone four times overall. The running back is set to split carries with veteran Frank Gore, as the two were listed as co-starters on the depth chart for the team's first preseason game.
