The Jordan Howard experiment was a disaster for the Miami Dolphins.

Miami inked the veteran running back to a one-year, $5 million deal in free agency. On Monday, the Dolphins waived Howard.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported it was a “mutual parting,” with head coach brian Flores saying Howard was a “consummate professional.”

Howard's Dolphins tenure hardly got off the ground.

The former Pro Bowler appeared in just five games and rushing 28 times for just 33 yards. Miami instituted Myles Gaskin as the starting running back, and Gaskin was about the only backfield player to give the Dolphins any production.

Howard's career has been on the decline in the last couple years. The former Indiana standout rushed for 1,313 yards on 5.2 yards per carry in his rookie season with the Chicago Bears in 2016. Howard rushed for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns the following year, though he averaged just 4.1 yards per carry.

Chicago was content moving forward without Howard after he averaged just 3.7 yards per carry in 2018. Howard had also become less and less of an option in the passing game, and the Bears' decision to draft David Montgomery made him expendable.

Still, Howard seemed to have a bounce-back campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles last year. He rushed for over 500 yards in 10 games, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and giving the Eagles production when rookie Miles Sanders went down with an injury.

However, Howard never really managed to find his place in Miami, and he will now enter the open market as a free agent.
