Aside from the challenges of preparing for the 2020 NFL season amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the league has also changed its tune regarding player protests that bring attention to racial injustice. As a result, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has doubled down on his efforts to fight systemic racism.

According to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe, Ross will be donating $13 million to his non-profit known as RISE to help settle the social unease in the United States:

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is committing $13M over next four years to RISE, his non-profit aimed to combat systemic racism. It raises his total commitment to $30M since 2015.

“Now more than ever, our mission and the need for this work is clear.”

Although many players throughout the league have taken a stand with the African-American community and made efforts to spark true change, it has largely been a one-sided effort. While owners may have switched their stance regarding the prospect of player protest, they must now take an active role in showing their support if they hope to make up for lost time.

Ross has caught plenty of flak for his continued support of President Donald Trump. After all, Trump has never passed up on an opportunity to shoot down the idea of players using their platforms to bring attention to the real issues at hand. Despite all the turmoil plaguing the country at this time, he has taken to Twitter to threaten the league on his potential loss of viewership.

Ross' political beliefs surely do not help his cause when it comes to players, however, his efforts to combat racial injustice should be something that other fellow owners emulate.
