The Miami Dolphins suffered a major loss before the NFL preseason got underway with quarterback Ryan Tannehill going down with a season-ending knee injury. Fortunately, the team was able to bring in veteran Jay Cutler to fill the void.

So far, Cutler has been a welcome addition for the Dolphins in the wake of the Tannehill injury. Cutler will make his regular-season debut for Miami in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he's receiving an interesting comparison from head coach Dirk Koetter, via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

“He's a strong-armed, quick-release guy, stand in the pocket (passer),” Koetter said Monday. “He's been a little streaky in his career, and when he's hot, he's red-hot. I've seen him light teams up. This week, he's Joe Namath to us. He's the greatest quarterback, whoever your greatest quarterback is, because he's the one we're playing this week.”

Although Cutler was once thought of as a quarterback bound to be among the elite at his position in the NFL, he's never really gotten to that status outside of some success in Denver and Chicago.

Despite Cutler's shortcomings throughout his career, the veteran gunslinger can still be a force to be reckoned with at times like Koetter points out. In fact, signing with the Dolphins gives him a fresh start with a talented team in which he can help get back to the playoffs this year.

It'll be interesting to see how the Cutler experiment works out in Miami. The Dolphins could emerge as a team to watch in the AFC or another failed stint for the well-traveled quarterback.
