Despite speculation that he was close to a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions, Frank Gore is still an unsigned free agent. The veteran running back will continue his search for a new team on Thursday, as he’s set to visit the Miami Dolphins.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Former Colts’ RB Frank Gore, a standout in college at Miami, is visiting today with the Miami Dolphins, per source. Could be a fitting place to finish a HOF career.

As Schefter noted, Gore had a glittering college career with Miami, so he’s got fond memories of the South Beach area. But aside from his past ties to the city, Gore would also be a good fit for the Dolphins as he would fill a big need in their backfield.

After trading away Jay Ajayi last season, Miami could use a reliable running back to hand the ball off to next season. They’ve already met with another veteran in DeMarco Murray to fill that role, although they were unable to strike a deal.

Even though he’s now in his mid-30s, Gore is still not showing too many signs of slowing down. He was just shy of another 1,000-yard rushing season as he finished with 961 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and three touchdowns for the Indianapolis Colts last season. He also kept up his impressive streak of consecutive 1,200-plus yards from scrimmage to 12.

Gore’s ability to generate a consistent ground game should be a big boost to quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who will be coming back from a torn ACL.
