Donovan Mitchell is slated to sign a max extension with the Utah Jazz as soon as free agency opens, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. The Jazz star is coming off a titillating performance in a first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, one that ended with heartbreak after an 80-78 loss in Game 7 of the series.

Mitchell is eligible for a maximum extension of his rookie contract, which is valued at roughly $170 million over five years, though there was a slight concern that a serious injury in the restart could jeopardize his next check:

“Once my teammates told me they wanted to play, then I was all in. I couldn’t make it all about myself,” Mitchell said Tuesday night after being eliminated by the Nuggets. “There are younger guys who aren’t established in this league and needed this time to show their value. It would have been selfish of me to stand in the way of that. I couldn’t let my contract get in the way of the bigger picture. I had to rely on God. If I got hurt, it was God’s will. But I put my trust in Him and didn’t worry about potentially getting injured. That allowed me to go out there and play. My faith was in God.”

The Jazz had always intended to sign Donovan Mitchell to a new deal, considering he's clearly the talisman franchise player to keep the team moving in an upward trajectory.

Since being drafted 13th in the 2017 NBA Draft, he's seen three straight postseasons, though only making it past the first round in his rookie season.

Donovan Mitchell averaged a career-best 24.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists this season, numbers that extrapolated in the playoffs, averaging 36.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.9 assists during a long series against the Nuggets.
