Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock only started five games, but he has really opened up a lot of eyes with his play. He finished the season throwing for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions and has given Broncos fans some hope.

The Broncos haven't had a solid quarterback since Peyton Manning, but fans are starting to believe that Lock might be the future of this franchise. As good as Lock was during 2019, there are still improvements that he needs to make to take the next step forward. He can't be satisfied with his 2019 season or he won't reach his full potential.

Let's break down three improvements that Lock needs to make.

3. The Broncos Need Him To Trick The Defense

Lock at times would look towards his receivers and not look away before passing the ball. That worked, but defensive backs are going to start catching on, and it's going to lead to some problems if he doesn't change.

He needs to start using his eyes to move defensive backs where they want him, to open up other wide receivers. If he doesn't do that, turnovers are going to be a big issue because it's going to be something that teams will find on tape and attack.

2. Anticipating Throws

A lot of this will come down to getting better chemistry with his receivers, but he needs to start anticipating throws better. There were too many times that Lock would throw it a second too late and a receiver would have to reach back for the pass instead of catching it in stride.

He needs to start trusting what he sees and make the throw a second earlier so he can hit his receivers in stride. If he can do that, it will result in more completions, and hopefully more wins for the Broncos.

1. Mechanics

Coming out of college, Lock knew he needed to improve on his mechanics and he has taken some big steps forward. He has done a better job of keeping his feet on the ground and not “retreating” in the pocket, but there are still times he goes back to the bad habits.

This offseason he needs to continue to work on keeping his feet on the ground and not continuing to drop back in the pocket. If he can take that out of his game completely, that is going to be a big step forward next season.

The sky seems to be the limit for Lock with the Broncos, but it's going to take some small improvements in his game.
