There’s something about winning that makes Philadelphia sports fans want to get their feet off the ground and climb up tall objects. The city’s preemptive light pole-greasing initiative was well-publicized. But after the Eagles beat the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl, Eagles fans basically decided to climb anything remotely climbable.

One such thing was the canopy at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia. A number of likely drunk Eagles fans somehow decided it was a good idea to climb up the awning en masse. After close to 20 people made their way up, the canopy finally did what it was expected to do as the viewing public went wild:

Lord knows what compels sports fans to wreak havoc on their own city and risk their own well-being to “celebrate” after their sports team has won a championship. There’s just something about it that feels so weird.

While there were cheers from the crowd when the canopy finally collapsed, it was still a pretty dangerous stunt which could’ve resulted in catastrophe. And of course, it goes without saying that the destruction of property is not cool.

But apparently, Philly fans seem prepared to perpetuate this perplexing tradition even if it means risking their health and safety. Championships haven’t come to their city too often over the years, so they appear intent on continuing this type of “celebration” around their city whenever they can get the chance.

It may not be an ideal form of expressing joy for a championship, but it shouldn't be an incredibly big deal as long as everyone remains relatively safe.
