Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Carson Wentz is still eyeing a return under center for the defending champions' Week 1 tilt against the Atlanta Falcons, but there are no guarantees it will happen.

Wentz was on WIP in Philadelphia Tuesday morning to talk about his playing status for the opener, and he said “it's going to be close,” according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“I obviously would love to be out there. That’s been my goal all offseason ever since the injury. It’s going to be close. It’s going to be close. I’m still eyeing that date. At the end of the day, it’s not just my decision. There’s coaches and doctors that really have the final say. I really like where I’m at and time will tell here.”

Wentz tore his ACL in the midst of an MVP-esque season that saw him throw for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns in just 13 games. While many wrote off the Eagles' chances after the injury, Nick Foles came to the rescue and led the team on an improbable run to Super Bowl glory.

Still, Wentz is the franchise quarterback, and the Eagles are eager to get him back on the field. Wentz has done some 11-on-11 drills in training camp, though lately his work has been scaled back to 7-on-7 drills because Eagles head coach Doug Pederson liked what he saw from the 11-on-11 work and didn't want to risk anything.

Wentz says he feels good, and he's anxious to finally get out of the rehab process and back into his normal routine.
