The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles open training camp on Wednesday. However, chances are they will still be without starting quarterback Carson Wentz.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Eagles will most likely place Wentz on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin training camp.

The Eagles report and have their physicals today, including rehabbing QB Carson Wentz. The most likely, cautious scenario is that Wentz lands on the PUP list, sources say, though he could come off at any time. It would not be an indication that he’ll start the season on PUP.

Rapoport notes that if the Eagles choose not to put Wentz on the PUP, they could opt to have him practice on a limited basis. But with his rehab going well, it’s unlikely the Eagles take any unnecessary risks with their young star. Besides, the Eagles can simply activate Wentz from the PUP whenever he’s finally deemed ready to practice.

Wentz has long stated that he is confident he will play in Week 1 after tearing his ACL in December. He made impressive strides in his recovery during spring workouts that made that speedy return a possibility. But while he will likely start training camp on the PUP list, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to fall short of his Week 1 goal.

Luckily for the Eagles, they have a perfectly capable backup quarterback in Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles ready to take the reps during training camp until Wentz is fully ready to return.
