Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is not expected to play in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Rams due to a back injury, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson announced Wentz would not practice Wednesday due to his back. He was also non-committal about Wentz's status for Sunday night.

The Eagles are 6-7 and have faint hopes of making the playoffs. If they lose against the Rams, that would all but end those playoff hopes and could also lead the team to shut Wentz down for the rest of the season.

Per Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Wentz had been limited at practice due to back issues at times earlier in the season. However, he had not missed any practice since returning from his knee injury until Wednesday.

Wentz has not quite reached the heights of last season upon his return from a torn ACL. He’s completing nearly 70 percent of his passes but has just 21 touchdowns through 11 games compared to 33 in 13 last year. He’s also rushed 34 times for 93 yards, way down from the 64 carries for 299 yards he had last season.

If Wentz does miss out as expected, Nick Foles will make his first start since Week 2. The Super Bowl MVP didn’t impress in his two starts this season. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 451 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

If the Eagles do lose to the Rams, they would be wise to shut Wentz down for the rest of the year, especially if this back injury has been lingering for most of the year. They'd have nothing left to play for in the final three games, so Wentz might as well rest his back and avoid another late-season injury.
