After the tragic killing of Minneapolis man George Floyd at the hands of a police officer, Carson Wentz of the Philadelphia Eagles responded with a heartfelt and passionate social media post about the incident – and about systemic racism in our society in general:

Wentz begins the post by saying: “All I know is that the institutional racism in this country breaks my heart and needs to stop.” He continues by saying he can’t fathom what the black community has to go through on a daily basis.

Though Wentz is sympathetic, he admits that being from North Dakota, he’s “spent a large part of [his] life surrounded by people of similar color, so [he’s] never going to act like [he] knows what the black community goes through or even has gone through already.”

Certainly, the killing of the 46-year-old Floyd has caused police brutality and institutionalized racism to return to the forefront of public discourse. Even though the four officers involved were fired, many believe (including Floyd’s family) that the officers, especially the killer, Derek Chauvin, should be sentenced to prison for murder.

A devout Christian, Wentz finishes his statement by saying that “we are all equal at the foot of the cross and Jesus taught us to value others’ lives like they were our own – regardless of skin tone… I don’t understand the society we live in that doesn’t value human life. It’s heartbreaking and disturbing. My prayers go out to every man, woman and child that has to endure the effects of the racism in our society.”
