The Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Seattle Seahawks in disappointing fashion, but that the final score, 17-9, doesn’t tell the entire story of how Carson Wentz missed almost the entire game due to injury.

The quarterback only threw four times, completing only one of those attempts. It didn’t take long before he was taken down the wrong way and had to be carted off the field. He reported a concussion and wasn’t allowed back into the field.

Critics lambasted the quarterback for not forcing his return to the field as he was a vital piece of the Philadelphia offense. However, the NFL’s chief medical officer branded Wentz as a hero for taking concussions seriously and not returning to play more snaps.

“I think what Carson Wentz did is heroic and should be highlighted as an example of how an unbelievably skilled and competitive athlete understands the seriousness of concussion injury and is willing to honestly report it and receive the care that he needs independent of his desire and drive to continue to participate in the game,” Dr. Allen Sills told The Associated Press on Thursday. “Having a concussion and playing through it is not about toughness. That’s demonstrating a lack of understanding of the severity of the injury. So I applaud Carson Wentz for understanding how serious this injury is and for getting appropriate care that he needs.”

Concussions are serious injuries that can affect a player’s quality of life long after he hangs up his cleats. It’s the right call for Wentz to focus on preserving himself rather than forcing the issue. After all, there’s still plenty of football left in him.
