There are a number of players throughout the league that have already decided to opt out of playing the 2020 NFL season due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Fortunately, this does not appear to be the case for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

Teams around the NFL kickstarted their training camp with a 72-hour screening process just to allow players and staff into the practice facilities. Despite some initial unease, Wentz says he feels safe with the guidelines in place, via Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports:

“I feel safe here,” Wentz said. “You never know how this is going to fully unfold but I feel safe here. It was something that my wife and I talked about, prayed a lot about and we feel good with our decision.

Wentz added that while he may feel safe, he also fully understands the concerns other players have about the risks involved.

“But at the same time, completely respect the guys that did decide to opt out for personal reasons, family reasons, health reasons, like Marquise Goodwin. I talked to him the other day. Fully respect this decision. Obviously, I'm bummed that I'm not going to be able to play with him. But fully respect those guys' decisions that do (opt out) for a number of reasons.”

Although it may have taken longer than expected, the NFL and NFLPA was able to establish viable, safety protocols for teams to follow throughout the course of training camp. It appears the daily testing and other precautions in place are more than enough to give Wentz some peace of mind.

Regardless, the situation is different for each player when it comes to risking the health of both themselves and their loved ones at home. This has led to plenty of speculation regarding whether or not there will even be a 2020 campaign.

The Eagles have already been dealt a few blows with the coronavirus after right tackle Lane Johnson, linebacker Nathan Gerry, and tackle Jordan Mailata tested positive for the coronavirus. This was followed by wide receiver Marquise Goodwin's decision to sit out this season.
