The Eagles had just restructured Long’s deal which would give him a significant raise next season (around $4 million guaranteed) to entice him to return. However, Long still took some time to think about whether he would accept the deal or retire, which he has contemplated in the past.

According to NFL Network’s Michael Silver, Long’s hang-up was reportedly a “football decision” and might have had something to do with his role moving forward following Michael Bennett’s arrival earlier this offseason. But he obviously decided for reasons known only to him that he would be coming back to help the Eagles defend their championship.

Long came to Philadelphia on a one-year deal in free agency last offseason after winning the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. He turned out to be an important contributor to the Eagles’ terrific defense, which helped fuel their run all the way to a Super Bowl title. He finished with five sacks and four forced fumbles as he played all 16 games.

With Long still on-board, the Eagles should continue to possess some impressive depth along their defensive front. While they did lose Vinny Curry, they did add Bennett to join Long in backing up Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett at the defensive end spots.
