In the last few weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles have been shorthanded in the backfield with their running back situation due to injury, but Darren Sproles is set to return soon.

Sproles has been dealing with hamstring issues over the last few weeks. Head coach Doug Pederson has touched upon the matter by stating that Sproles is getting close to being able to make his return in the coming weeks. (h/t Jeff Kerr of 247 Sports)

“He's close, he's close,” Pederson said. “Obviously want to make sure he's 100 percent. But he's getting better each day.”

The 35-year-old has missed the last four weeks due to the injury that has continued to prevent him from being able to contribute to the team this season. It has been a rough start to the year for him given that he is looking to make an impact after seeing the 2017 season come to an abrupt end after suffering a broken arm and torn ACL on the same play against the New York Giants.

Since then, he had made his return to the team inking a one-year contract over the offseason in hopes of being a valuable contributor in the backfield, but it has been anything but that this season. This latest update at least takes him out of action for Thursday's game against the Giants but does put him in line to possibly be on the field for Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.

This shifts more of the responsibility over to second-year running back Corey Clement and Wendell Smallwood to carry the workload. It has been further heightened with Jay Ajayi being out for the year with a torn ACL as he was the starting running back to begin the year. That said, it looks like Sproles isn't too far off from being back in the fold.
