The Philadelphia Eagles were previously thought to be in the market for a running back.

Former backup Jordan Howard signed with the Miami Dolphins at the start of the offseason, and the Eagles had also been linked to former Birds star LeSean McCoy. The Eagles were also reportedly looking into signing Devonta Freeman and Carlos Hyde.

But it seems Philly was mainly focused on Hyde. At least, comments made by Eagles head coach Doug Pederson on Wednesday morning implied as much (via Mike Kaye of NJ.com):

“We had the opportunity to possibly grab a player and he slipped through our fingers,” Pederson said.

The Eagles were linked to veteran running backs Carlos Hyde, LeSean McCoy and Devonta Freeman following April’s NFL Draft. Only Hyde has signed elsewhere, so Pederson was presumably talking about him.

Pederson also said he now feels confident in Philly's backfield, which seems to imply diminished interest in signing a free-agent back after Hyde was taken off the market (via Kaye):

“We’re always looking to add that depth and value, but I am pleased with that running back room right now,” Pederson said.

Hyde signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks in May. Meanwhile, the Eagles have had very little activity despite still having over $24 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.

Regardless, the Eagles will be banking on second-year back Miles Sanders to flourish in more of a full-time role.

Sanders rushed for 818 yards on 4.6 yards per carry. He also hauled in 50 receptions for 509 yards, giving the Eagles a dynamic playmaker they have not had since the days of “Shady.”
