The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles now have their new offensive coordinator. Per Tim McManus of ESPN, Eagles coach Doug Pederson is set to promote wide receivers coach Mike Groh to the role previously held by Frank Reich, who went on to become the new Indianapolis Colts head coach.

Groh got the job ahead of Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley, who also interviewed for the position along with Groh. Pederson had considered leaving the position vacant for 2018 following Reich’s departure to become the Colts head coach earlier in the month. But Groh eventually got picked for the job, and much like Reich last year, he will cede the offensive playcalling duties to Pederson.

This will be Groh’s first offensive coordinator job in the NFL. His only other experience as an OC was with his alma mater Virginia. He spent three seasons as the Cavaliers’ offensive coordinator, from 2006-08.

He had been exclusively a wide receivers coach in his five seasons coaching in the NFL. He was with the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams before spending last season with the Eagles.

Groh did a stellar job with his position group last season. He helped Alshon Jeffery, whom he coached with the Chicago Bears, make an immediate impact in his first season with the team.

Nelson Agholor also showed significant improvement in his first year working with Groh. He set new career-highs with 62 catches, 768 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns (five more than what he had in his first two seasons combined).

Groh will now inherit an overall talented Eagles offense which was among the very best in the league for most of last season. They were one of the highest-scoring teams with quarterback Carson Wentz under center, and they also didn’t miss a beat when Wentz went down and Nick Foles took over in the postseason.
