Last Sunday, Matt Lombardo of NJ.com, implied that Philadelphia Eagles running back LeGarrette Blount is in danger of getting cut by the team.

Despite the fact that he has opened both preseason games atop the depth chart and been given the bulk of the snaps and carries with the first-team offense, it wouldn't be surprising to see LeGarrette Blount among the Eagles' cuts despite signing as a free agent back in May.

Well, that doesn’t seem to be in sync to what Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is saying of the team’s prized free agency acquisition. Earlier today, Pederson spoke to reporters, including Dave Zangaro of CSNPhilly.com, and based on his tone and manner of discussing Blount, it doesn’t appear that the team is close to cutting ties with the eight-year veteran.

“The guy's a beast of a runner,” Pederson said. “I don't know what else to tell you”

“I'm excited he's here and he's going to be a big part of our offense.”

Blount was brought over to the team last spring with the Eagles expecting him to boost their running game that averaged 113.3 rushing yards per contest last season. With Ryan Mathews cut by the Eagles last week, the expectations on Blount to carry the backfield grew even more, which makes this rumors of Blount getting waived a bit odd.

That said, Blount is 30 and about to turn 31 this December, and is having a poor preseason in which he only has recorded 17 rushing yards on nine carries. The Eagles’ backfield doesn’t look that intimidating as of the moment if you take out Blount, as it only boasts of the likes of Darren Sproles, rookie Donnel Pumphrey, and Wendell Smallwood.

Blount arrived in Philly in May on the heels of a Super Bowl LI win with the New England Patriots and a season in which he rushed for career-highs of 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns.
