The Philadelphia Eagles have made splashes in past offseasons. However, it appears general manager Howie Roseman wants to take a different approach to the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Eagles have indicated that they are focusing on shoring up depth for their roster. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Roseman will rely heavily on the draft to do so:

“Try to accumulate a lot of good players,” Roseman said. “There are a lot of good players on both sides of the ball.”

He added that Philadelphia is trying to build for the long run while staying competitive.

“I’ve been humbled in the past by some of the mistakes I’ve made,” Roseman said. “We don’t know what we’re going to need a year from now, two years from now, and we’re trying to get long-term players on our team.”

Roseman's comments may come as a surprise considering the sky-high expectations in Philadelphia. There was some speculation on whether the front office would attempt to trade some picks in exchange for an elite player. However, it seems the Eagles are content with adding depth to their roster.

Aside from their picks in this year's draft, they also expect to get some compensatory picks by the time the 2020 NFL Draft rolls around. This approach will allow them to rely on younger players with cheaper contracts in the years to come. Although one cannot expect all of their late picks to pan out, there is also the possibility of discovering a gem in the later rounds. It will be interesting to see if they trade down in order to acquire more draft stock.
