The Philadelphia Eagles were dealt a significant blow to their backfield with the loss of running back Darren Sproles. It appears they will look to a familiar face to help fill the void.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles plan on signing running back Jay Ajayi:

The Eagles intend to sign FA RB Jay Ajayi, source said. He worked out this morning and they are deep in talks. The top veteran still available, he’s healthy after an ACL tear and returns to the team that traded for him in 2017. Helps make up for the loss of Darren Sproles.

The move comes in response to the recent rash of injuries Philadelphia has suffered. Sproles is set to miss the rest of the 2019 NFL season with a torn hip flexor. To make matters worse, running back Jordan Howard is still nursing a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 9 and still has yet to be cleared for contact.

Ajayi's first stint with the Eagles began after they traded for him in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Unfortunately, he was never able to find his footing in the offense and was not brought back after finishing the 2018 campaign with a mere 84 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He is now hoping to make a bigger impact in his second stay with the team.

Philadelphia will need all the help they can get with the New England Patriots coming to town in Week 11. If Howard is unable to play, running back Miles Sanders is likely set to take on a workhorse role. Regardless, this could open the door for Ajayi to potentially fill in as a complementary option.
