Running back Jay Ajayi had to undergo quite an adjustment last season. After being the clear lead back for the Miami Dolphins, Ajayi had to squeeze into a running back by committee after being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles ended up winning the Super Bowl with that arrangement at running back. But Ajayi, who is in a contract year, is eager to reclaim that lead role all for himself once again this season.

“Obviously, things have gotten a little shaken up in our room,” Ajayi said, via Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I'm excited to get into that lead role, do what's needed of me and just go bull. It was kind of a year and a half removed from being ‘the guy.' So I'm excited to kind of get back in that role and showcase again to the world what I can do.”

In seven regular-season games for the Eagles, Ajayi had 408 yards rushing and a touchdown on 70 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. He also added 184 yards in three playoff games. But as the workhorse back for the Dolphins, Ajayi went for 1,272 yards (on 4.9 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns.

While LeGarrette Blount is gone, Ajayi will still have a lot of competition for carries in the Eagles’ backfield. Corey Clement-who is also eyeing a bigger role-returns, as well as Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles. The team also added rookies Donnel Pumphrey and Josh Adams for further depth.

It still remains to be seen if the Eagles coaching staff does decide to lean more heavily on Ajayi, who is not really known as a receiver, or spread the touches to their other versatile backs. But as of the moment, he’s their best option on the ground on paper and should still get a good number of touches.
