Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld suffered a broken wrist during his team's preseason opener on Thursday night and will be sidelined for six weeks, but it doesn't seem like he needs to worry about his job security.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says that in spite of Sudfeld's injury, he remains the No. 2 quarterback and will assume that role once he returns.

“I think so,” Pederson said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “I mean, obviously we can go back and kind of look at what he did last year a little bit in some of the games. Obviously, the preseason game [on Thursday night].”

Sudfeld was solid on Thursday evening, completing 10 of his 18 throws for 177 yards and a touchdown.

“Would you like more time? Yeah, you’d like to get another game or two to see him in a little more action,” added Pederson. “But what he’s proven to us in practice the last couple of years, what he’s done out here, what he did in the game the other night, again he was smart with the football, made great decisions, threw the ball with accuracy. Those are all things you look for in the backup. … He did a nice job in kind of solidifying that spot.”

Sudfeld, who played his collegiate football at Indiana University, was originally selected by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round (187th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft but never played a snap for the Redskins before being released in September 2017, which paved the way for him to sign with the Eagles.

In two years in Philadelphia, Sudfeld has completed 20 of 25 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.
