Nate Sudfeld spent the last two years as the Philadelphia Eagles' third-string quarterback behind Carson Wentz and Nick Foles.
Now, with Foles starting under center for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Sudfeld will take center stage as the Eagles' primary backup, and if history is any indication, that is a very important role to take on.
While Sudfeld has not officially been named the No. 2 signal-caller just yet, he is the clear favorite in a field that includes Cody Kessler and rookie Clayton Thorson, and Sudfeld is ready to embrace the opportunity:
“Nothing’s ever going to be handed to you, and you don’t want it that way,” Sudfeld said, according to Andrew Kulp of NBC Sports Philadelphia. “There’s no sense of entitlement. Everything’s earned. I’m just trying to improve myself as much as possible, try to be the best version of myself, work on my craft. I know if I can keep improving and become a better player, it’ll all take care of itself.”
Sudfeld was actually drafted by the Washington Redskins back in 2016 but was cut by the team prior to the start of the 2017 campaign without ever making an appearance.
Since joining the Eagles, the 25-year-old has thrown just 25 passes, but he still feels he has gotten better:
“I feel like I’ve improved in a lot of ways since Washington,” Sudfeld said. “I think physically I’ve developed a lot. I think I was kind of a late bloomer, so I feel like I’ve gotten a lot stronger in the weight room, faster on the field. I just feel like physical development’s been huge.”
Obviously, Philadelphia is hoping for a full season out of Wentz for the first time since 2016, but Sudfeld seems ready to go if that does not end up occurring.
