The Philadelphia Eagles opted to place wide receiver DeSean Jackson on injured reserve with an abdominal injury. It appears they have now brought back a familiar face to help fill the void.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles have re-signing Jordan Matthews:

With Eagles WR DeSean Jackson on Injured Reserve after surgery, source say Philly is re-signing an old friend: Jordan Matthews is back with the Eagles.

There is no question that the loss of Jackson deals a devastating blow to the Eagles' receiving corps. The veteran suffered the injury in Week 2 following a spectacular 2019 NFL season opener and was hoping that surgery would not be necessary. Although the team had high hopes for his looming return, he is now set to go through with the procedure and will not be eligible to play unless they make the playoffs.

While there are few wideouts capable of bringing the same element of explosiveness Jackson does, Matthews' familiarity with the playbook does potentially make him another viable option in the passing game for quarterback Carson Wentz. The veteran is in his third stint with Philadelphia after coming aboard during the 2018 campaign to provide some much-needed depth.

The Eagles have managed to get back on track with back-to-back wins to stay hot on the heels of the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East Division. They will need to find a way to make do with the weapons at their disposal in order to win the second half of the season and buy time until Jackson can make his return.
