The Philadelphia Eagles are looking beyond the league to find the replacement that will fill in the spot vacated by former head coach Doug Pederson. It was reported that one of the emerging candidates for the job is Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.

“A source close to the Eagles said general manager Howie Roseman reached out to Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley about being the team’s next head coach, a call made not long after the team parted ways with Doug Pederson on Monday.”

After a 4-11-1 campaign in the 2020 season, Pederson was eventually booted out of Philadelphia which ended his five-year stint as head coach. He previously led the Eagles to a Super Bowl LII title and garnered a 42-37 overall record from 2016 to 2020.

On the other hand, Riley previously served as the team's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2015 to 2016. He was then elevated to become the Sooners' head coach back in 2017 to this day.

The 37-year-old tactician amassed an overall record of 45-8 through four years at the helm. The Sooners recently bagged the 2020 Big 12 championship along with a 55-20 victory to win the 2020 Cotton Bowl over the Florida Gators.

Riley has also coached back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray who now play for the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals, respectively. Riley also mentored a Heisman Trophy finalist in Jalen Hurts, who currently serves as the Eagles' starting quarterback.

The upcoming offseason will see whether or not Lincoln Riley will be the guy that will ultimately help the Eagles on their rebuilding cause moving forward.
