The Philadelphia Eagles announced Wednesday that they have signed safety Trae Elston, and in a corresponding move released linebacker B.J. Bello.

This is the second stint for Elston on the Eagles and the hope is that he can stick around a little longer this time. In 2017, he spent 10 days with the team and made one tackle in one game played. This is a move to help bolster the Eagles depth with some questions surrounding the safety position.

Rodney McLeod is still recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2018 season and Malcolm Jenkins skipped the voluntary portion of the offseason program and there is some thinking he could also skip the mandatory portion.

During voluntary minicamp, Andrew Sendejo and Tre Sullivan have been getting the first-team snaps at safety. Deiondre’ Hall, Godwin Igwebuike, and Blake Countess are the other safeties on the team competing for a roster spot.

Elston also played 13 games for the Bills in 2017 and finished with 15 tackles, three tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, one interception, and one pass breakup. After the 2017 season, Elston was waived by the Bills and was claimed by the Miami Dolphins. He was cut last September by the Dolphins and didn't get a shot with another team.

Bello appeared in three games for the Eagles at the end of last season and saw most his time playing special teams.

Elston seems like a bit of a long shot to make the roster, but depending on if Jenkins reports to the team it could open up another roster spot.
