The Philadelphia Eagles have locked up a key piece of their defensive line. The team announced on Saturday they have handed defensive end Josh Sweat a three-year extension worth $40 million. The deal will keep him around until 2024.

Sweat has proven to be a building block for the Eagles. He just finished up the final year of his rookie contract. The 6 foot 5, 265 pounder was selected by Philly in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He's the second player in the last week from that class to sign an extension with the Eagles, joining Jordan Mailata.

Sweat was a force to be reckoned with in the first game of the season against Atlanta, registering six tackles on 39 snaps. Fellow DE Ryan Kerrigan had nothing but praise for Sweat and would clearly approve of this new deal:

“I had no idea Sweat was as big as he is until I got here,” said Kerrigan. “I saw him up close and was like, ‘Wow, that dude moves like that on film, and is that big? He's going to be a problem for years to come.”

The Eagles have one of the strongest defensive and offensive lines in the NFL and that showed in Week 1, with QB Jalen Hurts getting sacked just once. On both sides of the ball, there are lots of imposing figures, with Sweat being one of the key figures. It's good to see him getting rewarded for his hard work.
