Nate Sutfeld made the most of his golden opportunity to start the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason opener. In the final minutes of what was likely to be his only stint on the field against the Tennessee Titans, though, his night came to an unfortunate end that will leave him sidelined for the foreseeable future – and put the Eagles in a major bind at backup quarterback.

Sutfeld, starting Philadelphia's first exhibition game in place of a resting Carson Wentz, suffered a broken left wrist late in the first half of his team's 27-10 loss to the Titans.

Though the Eagles didn't immediately release any details on the nature of Sutfeld's injury, it seemed likely to be significant considering he was taken to the locker room with his left wrist in an air cast. After the game, coach Doug Pedersen shed further light on Sutfeld's status, saying that while Philadelphia's primary backup quarterback will need surgery, he won't be gone for the season. As a result, the Eagles won't be adding another quarterback to the roster, instead continuing on with Cody Kessler as second-stringer.

“Because this is not season-ending, it doesn’t change anything,” Pedersen said of his team's quarterback situation, per Mike Kay of NJ.com.

Sutfeld played well before going down, going 10-of-18 for 177 yards and a 75-yard touchdown to wide receiver Marken Michel. Pedersen made it clear he was impressed with the former sixth-round pick's performance. “I thought he was playing well. He was seeing the field good,” he said of Sutfeld, per Daniel Gallen of Penn Live, adding that it his play was especially encouraging because it came against Carolina's first-string defense.
