Carson Wentz is set to join the Indianapolis Colts after being traded by the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. In exchange for Wentz, the Eagles are set to receive a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could turn into a first-round pick, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter.

Philadelphia will receive the 85th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and then there are two ways for the 2022 second-round pick in the deal to become a first-rounder, per the ESPN report. It all depends on whether Wentz can stay on the football field and have a successful stint for the Colts. The first way that the second-round pick can become a first-rounder is if Wentz plays at least 75% of his new team’s offensive snaps.

Another way that the second-round pick will be converted into a first-rounder is if the second overall pick of the 2016 Draft plays at least 70% of the Colts’ offensive snaps and the team reaches the playoffs. The good news for Philadelphia is that Indianapolis was able to reach the playoffs last season after finishing with an 11-5 record with Philip Rivers at quarterback.

However, it remains to be seen how the Colts will fare with Wentz, a one-time Pro Bowler in 2017, as their signal-caller. This past season, the 28-year-old played just 12 games for the Eagles and was ultimately replaced by rookie Jalen Hurts. Wentz completed just 57.4% of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while being sacked 50 times.

For the Eagles to gain more from the trade, they need to root for their old quarterback to be able to stay on the field and succeed with his new team. But even if Carson Wentz fails to stay on the field for a large part of the season and the Colts fail to reach the playoffs, the Eagles are assured of getting two draft picks in exchange for their former quarterback.
