Philadelphia's decision to trade Carson Wentz opened the door for Jalen Hurts to be named the starting quarterback in 2021. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie seems to want Hurts under center moving forward.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported Lurie has “instructed his group to prioritize making Hurts successful in 2021,” instead of making a move to set off a quarterback competition.

It seems likely the Eagles would bring in a veteran quarterback to push and mentor Hurts in training camp. However, the preference appears to be the former Alabama and Oklahoma star getting his shot at the full-time job, something he debuted over the last few weeks of last year's season.

The 22-year-old went 1-3 in his four starts in 2020, completing just over 52 percent of his passes and throwing four interceptions. But there was a certain electric factor to Hurts' play that the Eagles were missing out on. He averaged 7.2 yards gained per pass attempt and rushed for 354 yards on 5.6 yards per carry.

Hurts' mobility and arm talent could make him a special talent in the league, and now the responsibility falls on general manager Howie Roseman to set him up for success.

That might start by selecting a wide receiver with the sixth overall pick next month. The Eagles released veteran wideouts, DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery, and Tight end Zach Ertz might be on his way out the door, as well.

Philly could target the likes of Alabama receiver Jaylen Waddle, or even pursue Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, who can line up out wide or in dual tight end sets. Roseman will also need to add depth on the offensive line to help protect Hurts, via the draft or free agency.

Regardless, Lurie wants to begin transitioning with Hurts under center.
