The Philadelphia Eagles will head into their title defense without star quarterback Carson Wentz under center. The Pro Bowler went down with a season-ending knee injury last season and is still rehabbing as the 2018 NFL season gets underway on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

Although Wentz was ruled out of the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, it was thought it wouldn't be long before he taking over for veteran Nick Foles who'll have the starting gig to start the year. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, it appears it will take a little longer, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Even though Foles is a formidable backup as he was able to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl title last year in Wentz's absence, the former No. 2 overall pick is a legitimate superstar in the making and transforms the offense into a legitimate force to be reckoned with.

Before going down with the knee injury against the Los Angeles Rams last year, Wentz was arguably the frontrunner to win the NFL MVP award. Rams running back Todd Gurley made a strong case with a breakout season and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots won the award for the third time in his career, but Wentz put on a show turning the Eagles into a contender.

This year the defending Super Bowl champions will try to stay the course until they're able to get their star quarterback back under center. Until that time, whenever that may be, Philadelphia will stick with the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
