The Philadelphia Eagles have signed offensive tackle Lane Johnson to a four-year, $72 million contract extension, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The deal consists of $54.595 million in guaranteed money and makes Johnson the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history on a per-year and guarantee basis.

Johnson, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, was originally selected by the Eagles with the fourth overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He immediately started all 16 games at right tackle for Philadelphia during his rookie campaign and has been a mainstay along Philly's offensive line ever since.

The 29-year-old made back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2017 and 2018, including a First-Team All-Pro selection in the former year.

He has experienced some injury issues throughout his career as he has not played a full season since his rookie season. However, Johnson has missed just two games combined in 2017 and 2018 and this year he has played in 10 of the Eagles' first 11 contests. As a matter of fact, he just cleared concussion protocol and is set to play this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

While Johnson is surely happy with his new contract, he can't be all that thrilled with the way Philadelphia has been playing in 2019.

Expected by some to compete for a Super Bowl this season, the Eagles have gone just 5-6 and are coming off two straight losses. The good news is that the Dallas Cowboys have also been struggling and have gone just 3-6 since their 3-0 start.

As a result, the Birds can pull themselves into a tie with the Cowboys for first place in the NFC East with a win over the Dolphins this weekend.
