Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has been one of the best coaches in the NBA for some time. He has won two championships with the Big Three of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade.

While most coaches' rise to success is a similar path, whether it be assistant, G League coach, or an NCAA college coach, the path for Erik Spoelstra to get to the top of the NBA was much different than most.

Oddly enough, Spoelstra got hired by the Heat in a different role, as a video coordinator. He became a video coordinator for the Heat despite knowing nothing about video, but his tireless hours and endless work, which even prompted some to call him The Dungeonmaster, eventually led to a promotion as an assistant coach on Pat Riley's staff.

Erik Spoelstra spent two years as video coordinator breaking down game film and looking for adjustments that the Heat could make, and then became video coordinator and assistant coach. He was a part of the staff in 2006 when the Heat won the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.

Spoelstra was assistant coach and director of scouting for the Heat from 2001 to 2008, and never gave up on his dream and did every role asked of him with everything he had, and it finally paid off after years of film breakdowns. Erik Spoelstra was even credited for the improvement of Wade's shot and has been praised by many for his work ethic.

Then in 2008, Pat Riley decided to step down as the Heat head coach, and Spoelstra stepped in and was announced as the new man for the job in Miami. The decision to give Erik Spoelstra the job was an easy one as Riley became very impressed with him from his days as video coordinator, scouting director, and on the coach as an assistant.

From that point on, the legend of Erik Spoelstra began to grow.

He made history as he became the first Asian-American head coach in the history of all four of the major professional sports.

Erik Spoelstra led the Heat to the playoffs in his first year as head coach after they won just 15 games the year prior. Coach Spo's team got ousted in the first round in his first two seasons as head coach, but then James and Bosh came to town.

Erik Spoelstra and the Heat have been staples in the playoffs, and in 2020 they made an improbable run all the way to the NBA Finals before losing in six games to the Los Angeles Lakers.

In his 12 years as head coach in Miami, the Heat have made the playoffs nine times, including four straight trips to the Finals and two titles with the Bosh, Wade, James trio in what was his biggest challenge.

Wade was enamored with Erik Spoelstra, but adding the best player in the world with James and another All-Star with Bosh was a lot of pressure for him, but it paid off as they made the Finals in every year with that group, including back-to-back NBA Championships.

While the road to head coach was a bit of a strange one for Spoelstra, it's a huge success story and he has the chance to go down as one of the best head coaches in the history of the game if he can continue to have the success he's had. Erik Spoelstra is now the second longest-tenured NBA head coach, only behind NBA legend Gregg Popovich.

He is the franchise's all-time winningest coach after break Pat Riley's record a few years back and doesn't seem to be going anywhere, even with the Heat off to a disappointing 7-14 record this season due to ongoing issues with health and safety protocols.

The Heat can certainly turn it around, especially with Erik Spoelstra running the show. Jimmy Butler missed a handful of games due to COVID-19, and Goran Dragic and Avery Bradley spent some time on the shelf for various reasons.

The Heat sit towards the bottom of the Eastern Conference, and some reports even have Spoelstra on the hot seat, although that's not entirely fair after the different issues this team has had. Nonetheless, Erik Spoelstra has his work cut out for him even after leading them to the NBA Finals and beating the Milwaukee Bucks on the way.
