Phil Jackson‘s incendiary comments have resurfaced with the Cleveland Cavaliers visiting the New York Knicks as part of Wednesday night's ESPN doubleheader.

Last month, during an interview with ESPN, the “Zen Master” had made comments about LeBron James‘ departure from the Miami Heat, including a mention of a time when the team stayed in the Cleveland overnight because of James' own interests.

“It had to hurt when they lost LeBron,” said Jackson. “That was definitely a slap in the face. But there were a lot of little things that came out of that. When LeBron was playing with the Heat, they went to Cleveland and he wanted to spend the night. They don't do overnights. Teams just don't. So now [Erik] Spoelstra has to text [Pat] Riley and say, ‘What do I do in this situation?' And Pat, who has iron-fist rules, answers, ‘You are on the plane, you are with this team.' You can't hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland.”

“I always thought Pat had this really nice vibe with his guys. But something happened there where it broke down. I do know LeBron likes special treatment. He needs things his way.”

Maverick Carter, James' agent, took special umbrage to the use of the word “posse” to describe James and his friends — a word that has a somewhat vile connotation in today's society.

Spoelstra, who is still at the helm of the Heat, remembers this episode quite differently than Jackson.

“I don't even really remember that happening then,” Spoelstra told Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel before Tuesday night's game against the Knicks at American Airlines Arena. “Because we actually spent the night at LeBron's house.”

It was a prearranged team decision to spend Thanksgiving at James' Akron, Ohio, estate, not an edict issued by James as Jackson claimed.

“I honestly just think he gets bored and likes to throw stuff out there and get everybody all fired up,” Spoelstra said of Jackson.
