The acquisition of Timofey Mozgov by the Los Angeles Lakers was the first major agreement to be reported when free agency period started.

With the high amount of money involved in the agreement, it also served as the signal to everyone that a new norm in player contracts has arrived.

It doesn’t even have to be put into perspective. Four years for $64 million dollars is quite an investment.

It’s a big reach considering the performance that Mozgov dished out last season. Similar to a lot of Lakers supporters, ESPN was not a fan of the deal as well. In fact, they ranked the move by the team as the third worst acquisition this summer.

If this was made during last year’s free agency period, it would have been more acceptable given the promise that the seven-foot Russian had in his game and the way he transformed how the Cleveland Cavaliers played defense.

But a lot of things happen in such span of time, an injury hampered his confidence and eventually lost out his spot in the rotation. However, if coach Luke Walton can give Timofey Mozgov the right motivation, and if the latter is indeed back to full health, the Lakers could be looking at a steal down the line.
