Unfortunately, football is NOT coming home even though it was at Wembley already. England suffered a rather disappointing defeat in the Euro 2020 championship against Italy, choking on penalties right when it mattered most.

The game ended 1-1 in regulation after Luke Shaw and Leonardo Bonucci scored one each for their national teams on both half. It was Shaw who first put the Three Lions ahead with the fastest goal ever in a European championship final. However, while England looked to be on their way to Euro 2020 victory, Bonucci spoiled the party with a 67th-minute screamer that silenced the home fans already preparing for a big celebration.

Sure enough, after all those “Football is coming home” declarations, the internet and social media had a field day trolling England for the gargantuan upset. After all, they have everything in their favor: the homecourt advantage, the odds and the momentum. But still, they failed to capitalize and ended up with another disappointing finish.

Here are the best and funniest reactions to the wild Euro 2020 finish:

England's history on penalty shootouts did not go unnoticed as well. The Three Lions really do have a bad record on pens, with OptaJoe citing England have only won 22 percent (two of nine) of their major tournament shootouts–which is the lowest among European nations.

Against Italy, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were both stopped by Gianluigi Donnarumma on penalties, while Marcus Rahsford hit the post in a rather frustrating moment. Jordan Pickford made two big saves to keep England alive in the Euro 2020 final, but to no avail.

In the end, it was Roberto Mancini and Italy who ended up celebrating with the Euro 2020 trophy at Wembley–to the delight of their fans, of course, as the #FootballIsComingToRome go viral.
