As the Marvel Cinematic Universe transitions into Phase Four, the imminent release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been one of the most highly-anticipated programs post-Avengers: Endgame.

The Premise

The show takes place six months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Sam Wilson (The Falcon) teams up with Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) in a “worldwide adventure” that takes on the same theme as Marvel Studios' Captain America franchise. Both Wilson and Barnes were prominent figures in the three-part film series, but this time around, they will need to navigate their adventures without the help of Steve Rogers aka Captain America, who himself will not be part of this miniseries.

In a world that has been left in turmoil following the events of Endgame, the United States governments continue to look for “new heroes.” They find a couple in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as the rather odd pairing look to use their military background to pretty much help save the world.

Characters and Cast

Anthony Mackie reprises his role as Sam Wilson, a former military man that makes use of a specially designed wing pack. Co-staring alongside Mackie is Sebastian Stan who plays the role of Bucky Barnes, the best friend of Steve Rogers from the 1940s who ended up being brainwashed and used as an elite assassin by HYDRA.

Wyatt Russell also stars as John F. Walker, a high-ranking officer in the military who also happens to be the US government's new poster boy and the heir to Captain America's throne.

Emily VanCamp reprises her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter, who also featured in the Captain America films. Daniel Bruhl plays the role of Helmut Zemo, who served as one of the primary antagonists in Captain America: Civil War. Former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre also makes his cinematic return as feared mercenary Georges Batroc.

What's Beyond

At this point, Marvel Studios has yet to announce if they intend to renew The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for a second season and beyond. How the market receives the first season will likely determine whether or not the production company opts to order a second season of the show.

Another Marvel project that has recently made waves is WandaVision. The miniseries was also aired via Disney+ with the series finale being released a couple of weeks ago. While the show was generally received well by the audience, Marvel Studios has yet to announce if the series will have a second season.

Be that as it may, Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a lot more in store for its fans. Other television programs in the lineup include LokiHawkeyeMs. Marvel, She-HulkMoon Knight, and Secret Invasion, to name a few. Also, there are a number of feature films that have already been confirmed. Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsEternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home are all slated for a 2021 release, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)Thor: Love and ThunderBlack Panther IICaptain Marvel 2, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters (or streaming platforms) come 2022.
