The Detroit Pistons have built a nice young core of players that they aren't ready to break up anytime soon.

According to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, GM Jeff Bower said the Pistons have started preliminary talks to extended Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

We’re probably continue to take those talks a little bit further through the month and see if there’s an opportunity to reach an extension now and if we can, that will be great for both of us

Caldwell-Pope is heading into the fourth year of his rookie deal and is eligible for an extension. This is an easier and safer route for the Pistons who stand the chance of losing him if they allow him to become a restricted free agent and find themselves in a bidding war with other teams.

Since the Pistons consider him a part of their core moving forward, they feel he is worth going into luxury tax territory to keep on the team.

Last season Caldwell-Pope averaged 14.5 points, 1.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds, with still plenty of room to improve. He is a solid 3-and-D player that can help the Pistons contend for the playoffs now and in the future.
