After being overtaken by Ferrari in the F1 constructors' standings, McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo says that the team needs strong results in the last three races of the season to stand a chance at claiming third place in the standings.

Scuderia Ferrari, along with drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, has looked incredibly consistent over the last few races, which has catapulted them ahead of their main rivals for third place in the standings, McLaren. Their stellar run of form can be attributed to an engine upgrade the team introduced in Sochi.

Contrary to Ferrari's performance, Mclaren has been quite lackluster in the past few races. This string of poor performances in F1 has led to a 31.5 point drop-off from Ferrari, who leads with a confident margin at third place.

Heading into the F1 Qatar Grand Prix, Ricciardo understands that the team has been underperforming, and they must pull off massive results in the last three races—if the team wants to have a real shot at a third-place finish.

Via Formula 1:

“Looking over the whole season, I think Ferrari have been there from really race one,” added Ricciardo. “They had a few poles [in Monaco and Baku] as well in that early part. I don't want to say… we're not definitely conceding yet, but I think we've done well to keep up the fight till now.”

“But we'll definitely have to have a better weekend than them [in Qatar] if we want any real shot at this. But we'll just keep doing our thing and hopefully get a few more points than we've had the last couple of weekends.”

With both teams pushing to the absolute limit, The battle for third looks like it'll go down to the very wire. Neither team will give an inch, so expect intense battles heading into the final stages of the F1 season.
