F1 rising star George Russell opens up on joining the team of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, after his first post-season testing.

As Max Verstappen outlasted Hamilton in a controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, claiming his first F1 title; Mercedes is quick to utilize their latest acquisition.

With Valtteri Bottas departing Mercedes with five constructor championships, Russell has big shoes to fill, aiming to continue the team's overall dominance in the sport.

Russell, who once appeared for Mercedes during Hamilton's brief absence in 2020, reflects on his journey.

“It’s a strange feeling, because I’ve tested with the team numerous times after races, end of season, and here we are again,” Russell said after his first day of testing in Abu Dhabi.

“But obviously it’s my first time as an official driver for the team. It was a really great day to be back with the guys, and learning about the new tyres.

“It’s always a pleasant experience driving a world championship-winning car, the 2019 Mercedes, and with these 18-inch Pirellis, which seem to be reacting pretty positively. It was a nice day.”

Russell drove Mercedes' W10 from 2019 to test the 18-inch tyres for the 2022 F1 season. Although Hamilton experienced a tough defeat, Mercedes fans surely hope that Russell can aid the team in reaching success in the future.
