The Atlanta Falcons are finalizing a multi-year contract extension for star Julio Jones that would make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the league, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Pelissero's NFL Network colleague, Ian Rapoport, adds that the deal will be for three years and around $66 million.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank had recently remarked that the two sides were “very close” to coming to terms on a deal, and he turned out to be right.

Jones did not hold out and showed up to offseason workouts and training camp despite not getting the new deal he was promised last year, and his faith has been handsomely rewarded by the Falcons.

With his new deal all but sorted out, he is now set to suit up for their Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

Jones has been among the best wide receivers in the entire league since arriving in 2011. He's been a Pro Bowler six times and a First-Team All-Pro twice. He's also led the league in receiving yards twice.

His most recent receiving title came last year when he had 113 catches for 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns.

Jones has had at least 80 catches and 1,400 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons, which is a testament to his remarkable consistency.

But with the increase in salaries for wide receivers since Jones signed his last deal, he wasn't sufficiently getting paid for his elite production. With his new deal, though, he will now be paid like one of the very best wideouts that he is.
