The Atlanta Falcons have one of the more dynamic running back platoons in the NFL with Pro Bowler Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. The Falcons already locked up Freeman to a five-year, $41.25 million extension last summer. They will now have to decide whether to do the same with Coleman, who is set to be a free agent at the end of 2018.

As Kelsey Conway of AtlantaFalcons.com reports, Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff thinks it’s possible to keep Coleman aboard and keep their platoon intact.

“I believe you could realistically do it,” Dimitroff said. “I think, again, it comes back to an earlier question when you’re talking about looking at all the different spots on the roster and what you can do to create the space.”

While Freeman took a slight step back in 2017 compared to his production over the last few years, Coleman has continued to make strides. He had 628 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to go with 299 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

Finances will obviously be a big stumbling block in terms of re-signing Coleman. The Falcons have already made Freeman the highest-paid running back in the league. Meanwhile, the looming extension for quarterback Matt Ryan won’t come cheap. And if Coleman also wants the opportunity to become the No. 1 back, the Falcons will be hard-pressed to make him stay and share the load with Freeman.

Nevertheless, the Falcons should still do whatever they can to keep Coleman, who has become an integral part of their offense over the last few years.
