Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman is nursing a sprained foot that kept him out of his team's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and his status for the Falcons' matchup with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night is in question as a result.

But head coach Dan Quinn provided some good news on Monday, saying that Freeman is expected to participate in practice this week, according to Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' team website.

Freeman has been a major disappointment this season overall, as he has rushed for just 371 yards without any touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.5 yards per carry. He has also logged 38 catches for 282 yards and three scores.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Florida State, was originally selected by Atlanta in the fourth round (103rd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He played only scarcely during his rookie campaign, finishing with 248 yards and a touchdown on the ground while catching 30 passes for 225 yards and a score, but the following year, Freeman broke out, racking up 1,056 yards while reaching the end zone 11 times as a rusher, registering four yards per attempt. In addition, he hauled in 73 receptions for 578 yards and three touchdowns, en route to the Pro Bowl.

The following year, Freeman posted similar numbers, totaling 1,079 rushing yards and 11 scores, averaging 4.8 yards per tote. He also snared 54 balls for 462 yards and a couple of touchdowns, making another Pro Bowl.

Since then, however, Freeman has been on the decline, and a groin injury knocked him out for just about all of 2018.

The Falcons have been one of the league's most disappointing teams this season and are just 3-8.
