The Atlanta Falcons welcomed back a familiar face this offseason with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. It seems he already has an idea for the Falcons' new approach on offense.

Atlanta's offense fluctuated heavily throughout the 2018 NFL season. Koetter said that he hopes to bring a sense of balance next season, via the team's official website.

“Since balance is the hardest thing to defend, we will shoot to be as balanced as we can,” Koetter said. “Now, there's things like time and score and injuries that can affect that, but we're going to definitely shoot for that.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Koetter's comments. The most high-powered offenses in the league such as the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints boast a run and pass game that is equally formidable. This helped keep opposing defenses at their mercy throughout the year.

Unfortunately, Atlanta was sorely lacking that balance last season. They finished the 2018 campaign as the fourth-best passing offense in the NFL. That should come as no surprise for a group led by former MVP quarterback Matt Ryan. However, the Falcons were also the fifth-worst rushing offense in the league as well and it certainly showed.

Of course, their struggles can be somewhat attributed to the fact that they lost two-time Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman for the season due to injury. Although running back Tevin Coleman has long served as a viable replacement, the Falcons seemed hesitant to stick to the run game. It seems Koetter will look to take the pressure off Ryan by having him hand the ball off more often.
